People have been predicting the death of the internal combustion engine for at least 50 years. Thing is, most of the folks making the predictions have themselves died, or been silenced by the fact that ICE is still here and it's better than ever. Still, the technology could be improved. All that sound and all that heat is just inefficient waste. And what about parasitic losses, like power steering pumps and valve train? Well, some OEMs (like Ford) are switching to mileage boosting electronic steering to save some MPG. However, electric valves are a long ways off. Not only would they be infinitely variable, but removing the chains, rods and springs needed to run conventional valves would increase mileage by 20%, at least. And that's just one route.

Another is the EcoMotors International (EM) opoc engine, aka open piston, opposed cylinder. Here's how it works. Instead of an I or a V pattern, EM's opoc is laid out like a two-cylinder boxer engine. However, each cylinder contains two pistons, and they are facing each other. This gives you four rods turning the crankshaft, with no cylinder heads and no valve train (for the record, we're not sure how fuel/air enters and exits). The opoc engine is also a two-stroke, guaranteeing lots of quick torque, but it "runs as a fully balanced 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine."

Shrinky-dinkying the engine has a whole host of other benefits that EM lumps together under the banner, "power density." They include: lower weight and smaller size, fewer materials, less friction, higher MPG, lower missions and less heat rejection. And as the engine is working against itself, there's plenty of built in noise cancellation. Power? Burning diesel, two 100 mm cylinders produce 325 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque @ 2,100 rpm. Nice. The Lincoln Mark LT never really worked out according to plan. The thinking was that trucks and SUVs were so hot, all you had to do was rebadge 'em and then roll around in all the easy money. And while that worked wonders for Cadillac via the Las Vegas-a-riffic Escalade EXT, Lincolns with beds just never got any play. In fairness to the LT, the stage for failure was set by the Blackwood, a truck only intended to appeal to polo players (the bed was carpeted). The LT, on the other hand, was essentially a fully-dressed F-150 with Lincoln badges. Lincoln Mark LT production stopped in late 2008 and no one cared. Except, apparently, Mexicans.

Despite all that, last March brought us some spy shots of a 2011 Lincoln Mark LT running around the Detroit metro area. Huh? Well here's the thing: These trucks are headed down south -- way down south. Turns out that the Lincoln brand still has a certain cachet in Mexico, and our neighbors to the south see no problem in shelling out a little extra for the honor of the badge. Don't laugh, there are plenty Americans who routinely shell out around $50,000 for the same truck with a Ford badge (the Lincoln Mark LT is essentially the Ford F-150 Platinum).

In general terms the Metromorph is aimed to address the evergrowing troubles of metropolitan cities, specifically parking and real estate space. As the user gets home the car rides up like an elevator and becomes a balcony, thus eliminating the hassle of parking and adding space to the apartment. In order for that to happen here are the specific features of the design:

Drivetrain- the vehicle is powered by two in wheel motors placed in the back. There are two battery cases on the back as well.

Interior- the seats are held by rotating arms which keep the seat level when the vehicle goes vertical or horizontal. When the vehicle is a balcony the seats are plased on a rolling base which enables them to become lounge chairs thus freeing up the interior of the car to make it a balcony. The interior is also left fairly hollow to accomidate the balcony mode.

Mazda has officially announced the European release of the facelifted Mazda RX-8. The 2010 model year RX-8 will take center stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, showing the same restyling customers in Japan have received.

Some of the changes include a new front bumper, new headlights, and LEDs incorporated into the rear lights. The front now brings the car more in line with the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6. Although exhaust tips are now round, the triangular shape is still seen in the red reflector at the base of the rear bumper. Mazda is also using new side skirts, as well as new 19-inch alloy wheels.

Under the hood, Mazda will use the unchanged 1.3-liter rotary engine that provides 231 hp and 211 Nm. The engine now has a second knock sensor, for increased efficiency. Using the six-speed manual, the car can reach 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. The car tops out at 234 km/h (145 mph). New engine choice may appear with the 2011 Mazda RX-7, but that is unconfirmed.

Inside, the driver and passenger will be held into place thanks to the Recaro sport seats that combine black cloth and leather. A new instrument cluster, steering wheel, and sound system are included, as well as Bluetooth functionality.

Pricing has not been officially announced, but could reach as high as €38,000 in Germany, including tax.
